She Walked On

It was only
a matter of days
until the end of
time as they knew it,
but only one of them
knew it was coming.
The flame on the fire
was smoke in the morning
the ice in the pitcher
had melted away.
He smiled in the mirror
and the smile was returned,
but when met with her face
there were no smiles left.
It was only
a matter of time
for someone like her
to be on their way
to the newest façade.
The awkward silence
was interrupted by
the pitter-patter of
the morning rain.
His heart sunk
like a ship out to sea
and her eyes veered
like a ship on the run.
Her footsteps were loud
outside in the rain
as she walked on
for reasons
that neither of them
would ever
understand.
